Getting an Indian visa is straightforward if you know the process. Here's a practical guide covering the most common visa types for travelers.
E-Visa (Easiest Option)
The Indian e-Visa is available for citizens of 160+ countries and is the quickest way to get travel authorization.
Types of E-Visa
- e-Tourist Visa: 30 days (double entry) or 1 year / 5 years (multiple entry)
- e-Business Visa: 1 year, multiple entry
- e-Medical Visa: 60 days, triple entry
How to Apply
- Visit the official e-Visa website
- Fill the application form (15-20 minutes)
- Upload passport photo and passport scan
- Pay the fee online (varies by nationality, typically $10-80)
- Receive approval via email within 72 hours (usually faster)
- Print the ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) and carry it
Important Notes
- Apply at least 4 days before travel (recommended: 2 weeks)
- e-Visa is valid for entry at designated airports and seaports only (all major ones are included)
- You need at least 6 months validity on your passport
Regular Visa (via Embassy/VFS)
For longer stays, work, or if your nationality isn't eligible for e-Visa.
Process
- Fill the application on the Indian government visa website
- Book an appointment at VFS Global or the Indian embassy
- Submit documents: passport, photos, travel itinerary, proof of accommodation, financial statements
- Processing time: 5-15 working days
- Collect passport with visa stamp
Common Mistakes
- Passport validity — must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date
- Photo specifications — white background, 2x2 inches, specific format
- Incomplete form — double-check every field before submitting
- Last-minute application — allow at least 2 weeks, ideally a month
On Arrival
- Fill out the arrival card on the plane (or at immigration)
- Keep your return ticket and hotel booking confirmation handy
- Immigration is usually smooth at major airports (15-30 minutes)
